Wendy is 4 years old and started going to a Project Quetzal preschool in Buena Vista in Sololá in January of 2019. Her teacher, Irma, took this video of her “reading” Froggy Goes to School  in September of 2019. Buena Vista is a small indigenous pueblo, and most of the people who live there speak only the Mayan language, Kaqchikel. There is no Spanish spoken in Wendy’s home and there are no books. So, not only has she learned Spanish, but she has learned what books are all about — left to right progression, turning pages at the appropriate time, matching the text and pictures to the story. And she tells the story about Froggy’s day with such expression, which is a reflection on what a good model her teacher has been. She is happy and proud of herself.  She is not reading; but she is on her way, and she has learned that reading is an enjoyable activity. What an incredible experience and opportunity for her and all the children in Project Quetzal’s preschools!
